The island castle where Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned in 1567 can be visited in the summer months by small ferry. In the 18th century, Kinross as the county town was a staging post for mail and passenger stage coaches. Many inns provided a welcome for weary travellers and this tradition of hospitality is still a feature of 21st century Kinross. Loch Leven is part of a National Nature Reserve, famed for angling and for the thousands of geese and wildfowl which winter here. Many other activities and places of interest abound in the area. Vane Farm is part of the Loch Leven Nature Reserve and is an ideal day out for all the family. Burleigh Castle was the main seat of the Balfours of Burleigh family - the estate had been granted to Sir James Balfour of Balgownie by King James II in 1445/46. It remained in the ownership of the Balfours until the mid-18th century. Balado Activity Centre consists of over 100 acres of grassland, woodland and hard standing. As well as the internationally known T In The Park, Balado Activity Centre has been host to dogs show, classic car meetings, caravan and traction engine rallies, hot air ballooning, clay pigeon shooting and driver training. It is also the home of Traction Kiting and the ‘Just Add Wind’ event. The area is also well served by the state of the art leisure centre in nearby Milnathort, as well as many options for pampering and relaxation, with treatments available locally.
